So I'm building another car. The red elcamino with my engine had a 3500 stall in it and I think my engine needs more. I'd have to dig out my cam card for all the specs but it's .630 lift intake and exaust.
I might drive this new car on the street a few times. How high of a stall can I run on the street safely? I'd like to see 5k if I can.
Thanks for any advice.

I have a Hughes GM45, 4,500 stall, turbo spline, that I am trying to sell for a customer. ($300.00 cash) ($629.00 new price) This is a standard, so if you use a mid-plate it will have to be shimmed to the flexplate. If you want more than 4,500 stall you are going to have to have a custom converter built, and they are from $995.00 and up for a Hughes.

What a converter stalls at is dependent on power applied to it. Lots of variables that come into that equation. Good convertor builders can come real close to hitting a stall RPM target, but even the good ones can miss the mark. That's why most offer a "free stall adjust" after the fact / used in your enviroment. That being said, for a street strip combo it's not that big of deal. Just like hand grenades, close is good enough. I have run both an 8 and 10 ATI converter in the Chevelle, doing real street driving in "city traffic". Both were more than managable, with the 8" stalling at approx 5200 rpm in my car. Your going to build more heat in the trans with a looser convertor, MPG will suffer as well.
Score that Hughes from Mike, if you dont like it you can sell it to the next guy that is looking for one! That's a good price on a quality part.

Thanks for your guys input. That 4500 would work pretty good. I'll get ahold of you about that Mike.
