I was asked by Earl to pursue this, so today I have talked to ever aftermarket transmission manufacturer in the country, Reid, ATI and JW. We will never, and I mean never get someone up here in Alaska to be able to re-certify their transmission cases or bellhousings. It is a huge liability issue, and they really don't care how far away we are from them. I am doing one JW Ultra Case & Ultra Bell right now and I had to send it all the way to Florida to get re-certified. ATI's will have to go to Maryland and Reid's to California. By the time it gets back here with the $109.50 re-cert fee plus the cost of S&H, a new unit could have been purchased. If anyone ever wants to upgrade to a aftermarket transmission case, I am pushing all of Reid's product period! I will not buy any of ATI's or JW's products just because of their location in the Lower 48. Shipping to California and back is a whole lot cheaper than to Florida and Maryland. Just one more thing to make my blood boil!

A thought? Why would you have to have anything re-certified? I could understand it if, you blew it up or had some sort of damage or accident. But If like all of us up here, you get minimal runs on a part should you be forced to get it re-certified? Like the seat belt issue, come on! 2 years? and more then half of that time our cars are parked. So why? I believe the Makers and SFI are in this simply for the money. Here's a question for everyone,, Should your stock frame on your car need to be Certified ? It's steel? and subjected to alot of force? And can anyone tell me why we need to have our trans shields recertified even though we have never had a trans problem. Why does a chunk of Aluminum need to recerified every 5 years? and it's cheaper to replace then re-cert. I have a hard time understanding some of these rules that we are forced to abid to. Let's all make Safety a priority, but use some common sense also.

I agree with John. Anything that goes good for a cert for 2 years in the states should be atleast four here. They make a side note for alaska on shipping, why not on certs too? "certs good for 2 years, 4 years if in alaska" Sounds good to me... I'm glad I just bought my one piece reid case. Im trying to buy everything as close to the west coast as possible. I'm pretty sure that this cert issue is the reason why julian wilkerson stopped racing his bbf fed. He liked racing it, but with as little as he races, theres no point in spending all that money for belts, shields, gear and all that other misc crap.

My JW is expired, i looked in too having my current glide recert and built to handle the new motor but parts alone will cost just a few hundy less than a brand new rossler T-6 glide. With any amount of labor and shipping cost it would cost more to build a tranny out of one that sits good now for 700+ hp that has a bad date then to buy a top of the line brand new T-6. I will just keep the old one intact for a project down the road i guess lol.

Phil, You can't argue with the SFI people, and the transmission case manufacturers have a liability issue to deal with. Everyone has to deal with it. A Rossler T-6 is: $4,295.00 with a stock Glide case, add between $990.00 to $1,040.00 for a Reid case, $179.00 for a Reid roller tailhousing plus shipping $$$ from Ohio? I'm going to guess that's going to come in about $6,000.00

Buy Local Damn-it!!!!!!!!!! I have had several of Mighty Mikes transmissions in a few of my cars over the years, and they always work flawlessly. More importantly he stands behind his work. Say you buy from the lower 48, and you have a problem or tech issue. What are you going to do? And I know race cars never have problems with transmissions but just what if it does? ;D I buy as local as I can within reason on everything I buy!! So what if it is even slightly higher in price. The service you get is more than worth it. You just can't put a price on someone that is willing and able to come over to your pit, put his mind and his hands on your car, and give you some advice. Priceless!!!!! Try this with your lower 48 vendors. Please support our local guys people: Jay Childs Racecars, (tires, speed parts and fabrication work) Mighty Mikes Transmissions, Advanced Powder-coatings, (header coatings) A-1 Auto body for your next paint job.
These are fantastic guys to buy from, and I promise you wont get better service from some scab in the lower 48 who couldn't give a shit who you are. ;D
Just my two cents. Thanks.

Hansen Transmission is your local Reid authorized distributor, and my husband Chris builds one HELL of a Powerglide, just check out the Hansen's stickers all over Ak raceway. The one in my Altered has been in for 5 years now, and it's only coming out because of the re-cert. Also, being the distributor, I get a discount on the certs which I will pass on to any racer who asks. Lastly, my DHL account gets them there and back for alot less than what UPS or FedEx charges.
