Tech said I needed a shield completely enclosing my welded on sump. If that is in fact the case I will get one made. I cannot find where this is stated anywhere. I was told since I modified the stock tank -that it is now considered a fuel cell. And since it is below the floor it needs to be shielded comPletely. Thanks for any confirmation.

If it hangs below the floor, it has to have one. Just go get some aluminum and make a little cover and rivet it to the floor. It's to keep debris from coming up and pincturing the fuel cell. Even mine which is mounted in the front of my vehicle where you would think rocks dont fly, had to have one. Just go buy aluminum, make a bigger version of your sump and rivet it in. It's good insurance anyways.

In order to rivet it to the floor I would need to cover the entire 15 gallon tank in aluminum. I guess I'll fab something up to go under the tank straps and cover the sump. I just haven't been able to find reference to needing a shield except plastic cells.

Yeah i agree that its a pain, but look at where mines located, and it still has to have one.

And to be completely honest, I don't know if that's an actual ihra rule, but with the rocks we have at our track, I can see why they would want us to cover a fuel cell. Plus, track has last say on all rules.

Am I going to be ok with a shield that goes under the straps and covers the sump? If I have to cover the tank then I'm not sure it's worth it to me. This isn't a drag car, I just wanted to run it once in a while. Thanks

You should be, if thry said you havve to have one because of the sump, then that should be the only thing you need to cover, because if you didnt have it, you woiodnt have to cover anything, if that makes sense. There's no way to cover that whole tank without it being awkward, weird looking and most likely a huge pain in the ass.

Lets say you had a race cell hanging that low you would have to shield the whole thing, but if it were in the trunk with just the sump hanging down the you shield that. I would make a shield that goes under your straps around the sump and make Mark happy. But looking at the picture your tank sits kinda "down "there. I talked with John Oneal at IHRA this morning and I did ask about this, and he said depending on HOW far below the bumper it was would be his factor on the rule... Just do it and don't worry.. How fast is your car? One of his points was lets say you lose a tire/wheel will it drag the ground? ?.....

When I was racing my Chevelle, I ran into a similar "challenge". All they made me do was bend up some metal, and the only portion it covered was the sump. Not the whole tank. I agree with Devin on this. Bend up a piece of metal so that it will bolt up and protect the front side of the sump. I think if you fabricate it just right, it probably wont even be noticible from the back of the car. (which your car looks very nice by the way) If your unsure, and when in doubt... Call Mark. He is very easy to work with if your nice!

Yeah i agree that its a pain, but look at where mines located, and it still has to have one. But Devin look at where your tank is.... I am speaking from experience... Mine was right there in the same spot in the vega.. Remember I hit the wall with the nose... Didn't even hurt the tank... NUF SAID! It is all about safety. I don't like sissy bars on my car either... But they beat the heck out of ending up on my roof.LOL... Hope to see your truck running this weekend.

Thanks to all, If I can just bend something to go under the straps I'll be ok. The tech guy was nice about it, I just wanted to make sure it was going to be ok to just cover the sump. Covering the whole tank would just have me ordering another stock tank and not sumping it. Question 2, do I need to cover the outlet too? Car ran 110mph on Sunday 12.6-13.2

I would angle your line up a little more then just come out a little past the sump.. 1/2 IN MAYBE.

It is in the rule book. It doesn't reference any type of tank material. Pain I know. Had to do it myself. Safety is what it's all about..
