Here's another idea: We have a group of volunteers who are trained at the beginning of the season who are the "Clean Team". When an oil down occurs, the clean team springs into action and saves the day. All for the low low cost of nothing. Granted the down time is what cost's Earl, but if we were trained properly the clean up time should be faster.
When a mess occurs, the Tower would need to call the team to action. We as racers seldom have the opportunity to watch the races, but if we were called upon when needed, it might work.
Training is the key. If Earl and track management could show a group of guys the right way to clean up, it might flow faster. Couple guys with mops, one in the sweeper, two four wheelers, a weed-burner dude etc.... I'm talking the "Dream Clean Team" You put 10 people out there and do record breaking efficient clean-ups.
There..... Earl saves us some money by not forcing us to buy diapers, we save him some with some free labor and quicker clean-ups. Win-Win scenario.

maybe go a step further. any racer who helps with clean up for a day can race for free the next day or another day. there might be a racer or two who would be down for a season, work the whole schedule and earn race days. just a thought.

I agree with Clint, if its not in the IHRA rule book that it should NOT be requried. Take the guy thats been building in his garage on a limited budget for a few years, then he finally shows up with a current and legal car acording to the rule book but is denied becuase of the track setting more strict rules than IHRA? It is getting too expenisve, its bad enough having to replace seat belts every two years but now having to modify stock crossmembers on 9.99 cars to fit diapers? Like Mike said, even a N02 or blown car is NOT required by IHRA to have a diaper tell 7.99. When my car is done, it may be one of the quicker door cars that is NOT a full tube chassis and only back halved. It will be built to the IHRA book for saftey and nothing more.

I got nailed for running antifrreeze and no flexplate shield and no window net after running a 9.99 in my old car, others seemed to get by fine after doing the same. Hugh?

As I understand it engine diapers are a safety item in that they can contain most or some of the oil from a broken engine and also some small parts that might fall out and cut a tire..hence the ballistic nylon and other materials they are made from..however having to modify a car with a crossmember can lead to a host of other issues with maintaining the structure of the car..so would that be a safer way to go? Also is this an issue of keeping the flow going on a raceday? or is it the cost of cleanup? if the IHRA rulebook doesn't require diapers untill 7.99 then that should be the rule...thats what sanctioning is all about I thought...maybe another way to go is if you oil the track that requires an extensive cleanup you pay 100$ no free ones...whether you run in the 14's or in the 6's another thought is to add 5 dollars to the entry fee to pay for cleanups...that 5$ could go into a fund of some sort to pay the cost and as there are days when there aren't any oildowns if could build up and maybe help the guys on a limited (and who isn't?) budget..

Nope no Kiss or anything. I wanted their $169 dollar standard one, but it is just a Rag. But if you want that rag to fit side motor mounts, that's more, add the fasteners, the Kevlar ballistic stuff, and the heat cloth on the outside, you end up at $350.
And that's just for a Small Block. Hate to buy one for a BB.

It's one of the things on my list. The new headers are here now, so it's test fit time for them and then take measurements for the diaper.

I'm still not thrilled about the diaper issue. I have spent a ton of money to make everything work with the clearance needed to run a diaper. Custom fabbed oil pan from Mickey Williams, custom dropped center link from Howe's racing (stock car stuff), fabbed front cross member all just to get clearance for a diaper in the camaro. With the headers and engine limiter its still going to be a nightmare to get this thing on (and off to change oil). On a more happy note I have gotten a great deal of work behind me and only have some wiring and a little plumbing left to do and it should be ready to run other than bolting a new trans and converter in place (ill get those in February). I still have to install a window net and replace the expired seat belts but if things stay on track it should be no problem to be ready by May (Other than fighting with that damn diaper lol)

Dennis at DRE told me they are easier to put on with the motor out, but said with a little work they go on with the motor in place. He said changing oil isn't that hard, you just undo the rear straps to lower the diaper. He's also the only one offering the Side Motor Mount Style. Here's what my diaper looks like DRE's website: www.enginediapers.com/

Pretty sure that's the one I'm going with too but with the Spohn tubular K frame and A arm assembly clearance shouldn't be an issue. ;D

Anyone want to buy a BBC diaper? (DRE kevlar with heat shields, non-SFI) We just received ours the other day, there is no way this this will fit the car and motor. Not unless I don't want to steer the car. Nice unit for a chassis car or dragster.
